Modernization within an existing operating mill.

The challenge
A paper mill modernization touched physical assets, automation, boiler management and machine controls throughout an operating facility. Nineteen distinct scopes involved project teams, equipment manufacturers, engineering firms and construction companies. Their separate schedules did not provide a dependable picture of the full program or the dependencies between its parts.
Sand Hill's contribution
Initially engaged for a two-week audit of total installed cost and schedule, Sand Hill expanded its scope to include program leadership, project controls, integrated planning and scheduling, cost management, risk management, procurement support, expediting, technical support, turnover, start-up and commissioning support. Sand Hill deployed on-site program leadership and a dedicated project controls team, establishing a fully integrated schedule and cost management system for the program.
The outcome
Over 2.5 years and two major outages, the program was completed within 1% of Sand Hill's initial cost re-estimate and within the timeframe Sand Hill initially estimated for completion.
How this work connects
The engagement connects project recovery with the delivery of a mill-wide modernization. Coordinating physical assets and control systems helped bring the intended operating capability into service. That connection matters to growth: an investment can support future business performance only when the organization can complete and use the resulting assets.
